Vollenhoven – a timeline

1892. Born in Amsterdam on 1 November.

1911. Undergraduate at the Free University, Amsterdam studying literature, theology and later philosophy.

1914-18. Worked on his doctoral thesis ‘Philosophy of mathematics from a theistic point of view’ (supervised by Wolter and then Geesink after Wolter’s death).

1918-21. Marries Hermina Dooyeweerd and becomes pastor of the Gereformeerde Kerken in Oostkappelle, near Biggekerke.

1920. Goes to on study leave in Leipzig, Germany, to study with Felix Kruger.

1921-26. Gereformeerde Kerken pastor in Zeeland and then in The Hague, where he renews contacts with Herman Dooyeweerd.

Extensive programme of reading neo-Kantian writings.

1922. Development of theory of modal aspects with Dooyeweerd.

1923. Collapses while preaching and is hospitalised for most of the year.

1924. Recovers from mental health collapse.

1925. Publishes a book on the history of the Gereformeerde Kerken in The Hague from 1572-1816).

1926. Professor of philosophy at the Free University (now called the VU Amsterdam)– inaugural address on Logos and Ratio.

1926-45. Work on his Isagôgè Philosophiae (Introduction to philosophy) – continually being revised.

1933. Publishes Calvinism and the Reformation of Philosophy.

1935. Together with Janse and Dooyeweerd sets up the Vereniging voor Calvinistische Wijsbegeerte (VCW) (Association of Calvinistic Philosophy). Served as its president for 27 years.

1937-39. Charges brought against Vollenhoven and Dooyeweerd by Valentijn Hepp (1879-1950), contending that he did hold to a Reformed Scholasticism – in that he rejected the immortality of the soul and rejected a nature/ grace dualism.

1946. First publication on his Consequent Problem Historical Method (CPHM).

1950. First volume of the proposed ten-volume history of western philosophy published – starts to work on his systematic charts.

1953. Divergentierapport I[Report of Divergences I] – report on the differences between Dooyeweerd and Vollenhoven.

1961. Tours North America – including 3rd annual Unionville conference and the Groen Club at Calvin College.

1963. Tours South Africa – lectures delivered in Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and Potchefstroom.

Retires from the VCW and as a professor at the VU – appointed professor emeritus.

1973.Special issue of Philosophia Reformata published to celebrate his 80th birthday.

1978. Died 6 June.

1992. Johan Stellingwerff’s biography D.H.Th. Vollenhoven (1892–1978): Reformator der wijsbegeerte (Ten Have, Baarn) published.

2000. First publication of Schematisch Kaarten I (edited by Kor Bril and P. Boonstra).

2005. Several translations of Vollenhoven’s work published by Dordt Press and De Zaak Haes.
