Johannes Jacobus Duyvené de Wit (1909-1965) was born in the Netherlands in 1909, he was head of a pharmaceutical company before taking a PhD at Utrecht in 1939. From 1951 until his death he held the chair of zooology at the University of The Orange Free State Bloemfontein, South Africa. He wrote over 18 papers on hybridization experiments in various fishes.
