H.J. Strauss

H. J. Strauss (1912-1995) from 1942 was a professor at the University of the Free State (UFS), Bloemfontein, South Africa. He was the first  philosopher at the UFS who advocated a reformational philsophy. In 1947 he became the head of the newly formed Department of Politcal Science. From 1968-1977 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

He studied economics with Diepenhorst at the VU, Amsterdam (c. 1936-1938) and published an article in Philosophia Reformata in 1937 and one in 1965 [Die Ekonomiebegrip by Othmar Spann, PR 4(2):94-117 and Nie-staatlike Owerheidstaak in Beskawingsamehang, 30(2-4):198-204 (Non-State Government Activities in Coherence with Civilization).]

Most of his work is in Afrikaans. He is the father of Danie Strauss.
